History of workshops

The fourth scientific and didactic meeting of the series “Values in the linguistic image of the world of Poles and Lithuanians” is a continuation of cyclical sessions (organized every year), during which the names of values fixed in the language are studied, which are the basis of identity and build dialogue between different nations, fostering understanding and establishing closer contacts.

This year’s meeting was devoted entirely to the issues of the borderland in its broadest sense. It had a much broader dimension than the three previous undertakings, which took place in 2019, 2020 and 2021, and was attended by researchers from many Slavic and non-Slavic countries. It was a scientific and didactic session with the participation of members of the Commission on Sociolinguistics affiliated with the International Committee of Slavists, who also participated in the parallel conference “Borderlands of Slavic Studies at the Turn of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Language – Society – Culture – Identity”. Participants of the workshop had the opportunity to listen to a number of papers on borderlands.

One of the main tasks that were carried out at this year’s workshop was the development of methodological bases for describing cultural phenomena recorded in both languages. Thus, the speeches of the lecturers dealt with: a) the description of dialect lexis in cultural dictionaries; b) the issue of distinguishing borderland cultures.

At the same time, we aimed to spread knowledge of ethnolinguistic research conducted in Poland and Lithuania, confrontation of two disciplines: anthropological-cultural linguistics (ethnolinguistics) and linguoculturology, placing them in the broad context of research on language, culture and identity conducted in Europe.

Individual papers were devoted to the analysis of the very current values in the modern world, such as kindness, respect, responsibility, tolerance, forbearance, as well as to the description of the so-called anti-values, terms that describe negative and harmful phenomena for society: war, danger, death, conflict, crisis, stupidity, quarrel, rape, humiliation and others. We also listened to lectures devoted to analyzing the names of nationalities and social groups, concepts related to nature and the symbolism of birds, perpetuated in popular culture.
